Here’s a step-by-step process for servicing your Hilliard clutch and preparing it for competition.
Gather the Necessary Tools
To service the clutch, you’ll need:
Impact driver with 1⁄2” snap ring pliers
Flathead screwdriver
Hammer
Magnetic parts tray
220 grit sandpaper or Scotch-Brite pad
WD-40
Brake cleaner
Conventional oil (like 10W30)
Rags
Disassembly
Start by removing the clutch's snap rings on both sides using the pliers. Control them as they come off so they don’t go flying.
With the snap rings removed, the clutch will separate into its main components. Organize the magnetic tray's bearings, spacers, shoes, and bell.
Cleaning
Spray down the components with brake cleaner to remove old grease and debris. Focus on getting into crevices on the shoes and bell contact surfaces.
Use 220-grit sandpaper or a Scotch-Brite pad to smooth and resurface the bell and shoes where they make contact. This removes any roughness or glazing for optimal grip.
Clear out any clogged debris inside the shoe channels using a screwdriver or wire brush. Knock free any stuck particles.
Relubrication
Wipe the resurfaced bell with a thin coat of WD-40 using a rag. Avoid over-lubricating it.
Relubricate the bearings by dipping a finger in light conventional oil and coating the inside and outside. Remove any excess oil.
Reassembly
Reinstall the components in order - spacers, bearings, shoes, and bell. Line up the channels so the shoes fully seat.
Replace both snap rings by pressing them into the grooves until they are fully seated. Spin the reassembled clutch to check for smooth operation.
